It’s hard for me to believe writers who say they never read their reviews. One of the reasons we write, maybe the main reason, is to communicate with other people, and a review is just a person with a point of view. You don’t have to believe them — the bad reviews are usually written by brain-dead inarticulate pseudo-literary zombies — but when they’re good it feels good, and after being subsumed by a story for years, in the dark, not completely sure you’re ┬ámaking a good thing or not, a writer needs, on occasion, to feel that way.
