How to Name a Dog

Thursday, October 23, 2008

I like to write about dogs. I also like to draw dogs. I got to do both in an article that just came out in a magazine called Garden & Gun. You can see most of the article here but it looks better in the magazine. Check it out. Get a subscription. I know what you're thinking. Still. It's a good-looking publication. It's not my first piece for the magazine and it won't be my last; I have another coming out next month. But the next one doesn't have pictures I drew and this one does.

Sir Walter Raleigh and Me

Sunday, October 19, 2008

Mr. Sebastian and the Negro Magician, that novel I wrote, recently won The Sir Walter Raleigh Award. It's a distinction honoring the best novel published in North Carolina in the past year, and I couldn't be happier to have received it. I've never won anything before, not even a radio contest, so for this to be the first is a great way to break the ice on the award thing. Keep 'em coming. Turns out I like them.

Sir Walter Raleigh had a fascinating life, and I'm happy to have an association with him. We look a little bit alike, too. If I'd lived in the 16th and 17th century and they beheaded both of us at the same time, it might have been hard to tell which head was his and which head was mine. His last words: "Strike, man, strike!" He wasn't bowling.
